The Estrella Update

So the trip to AZ was a ton of fun.  And Estrella War, again, was a blast!

I arrived Wednesday, and after spending much time standing in line, finally got to the event.  And then faced a sirocco.  SERIOUS windstorm blowing dust EVERYWHERE.  Spent the entire event with a 1/4 inch of dust at the bottom of my tent.  BUT once I got set up, I wandered about, found some people I knew, and got settled in.

Pennsic, frankly, is FAR better organized than Estrella.

So Thursday I begin to get into the swing of things, do some shopping, and even do a little fencing. It was during the day I found [profile] staceyspins and [profile] oaken_glen and [profile] tracytris as well as Ernst and Antonio. His Majesty Darius would be there as well, and so the EK was represented (this time I was part of an army of 4, rather than the entire Eastern Rapier Army!) So got in some fencing, and shopping, and then remembered just how cold the desert gets at night in the winter!

Friday begins the rapier battles, out on the broken field. We chose to side with Artemesia, and they were on the side of Atenveldt. And of course - we're outnumbered. So we have multiple scenarios - the first was a friendship battle, and my team was one of the last standing (while Antonio, [profile] oaken_glen, and [profile] tracytris were also still around). Then began the war points. First, I think, was the bridge battle. We lasted 28 of the requisite 30 minutes, though I died in the first 5 (front line can suck). I got to resurrect, though, and managed to run all over the Caid/Outlands backfield, distracting anywhere from 15 to 20 of their fencers, and having some fun.

Next scenario is the "Protect the commanders" scenario. They have 2, we have 2 - and its game over if they are made dead. THIS scenario I got about 8 or 9 kills - largely due to sneaking up behind and killing (I LOVE death from behind in melee!) We actually WON that scenario, as we got both of theirs, and they got neither of ours.

Then the "Capture the flag" resurrection battle. We have an hour, during which the marshals will check at random times to see how many of the multiple flags on the field we control to determine who is winning. This was a lot of fun, even though we lost in the end.

So on to more partying and such, more freezing during the night. Sixty degree days give way to 30 degree nights. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Saturday is the town battles. But first is the White Scarves and equivalents vs the World. This is my first time on the WS side of this - and I learned just how much damage simple intimidation can do! This was very cool - and we lasted FAR longer than we should have, as outnumbered as we were!

Then the scenarios. First is enter the city, get the gold. Yeah. Ok. Caid and Outlands came up so fast, we blinked, we died, and we barely entered the city, let along captured any gold.

Next scenario - protect the bank. Ok, sure. They have RBGs (Rubber Band Guns) and so do we. BUT, again, blink, I take 2 shots from various guns, I am out - and its over fast anyhow.

At this point, the war was over - so rather than the other planned scenarios, they did a resurrection, roman melee. Lots of fighting, lots of killing, and I played some - but got crunched into a hay bale, paused, went back, got gacked in the throat - dropped out and replaced one of the marshals.

All-in-all, a DAMNED good event. I had a lot of fun, saw old friends, made some new ones, was again impressed by the incredible courtesy of the Artemesians (who put me up, so I owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to them!).

So that is the short tale, kinda, of my 2nd Estrella War. I would love to go back again. Love Arizona - love Estrella War.

Less dust would be nice, next time, though.

When I see, "Lengthy discussion of my Estrella War adventures" I expect there to be some mention of nudity and/or duct tape. I'm disappointed. ;)

At the very least!
How about the peyote party?

You would think so...but, remember, nights are COLD in the desert - so not many willing to get nekkid when the sun goes down, and I'm on a combat field during most of the sun-up hours. And apart from myself, how many Mushniks were out there??

You would think the SCA could find an event site with stable weather.

Four word counterpoint: "War of the Roses"

Well gosh darn it (this is Sammy BTW), I saw you and thought about saying hi. Buuuuuut, you have a doppleganger out here that I have given an enthusiastic "Hiya Murray!" to and he looked at me as if I just sprouted two heads..

Wish I'd known you came out. Always good to see you! Let me know next time and I'll introduce you around :-)

....we'll work on that less dust than last year request for you....we would like it that way too. We were beating dust out of our pavillions for MONTHS afterward. The best part was for the people for whom the next camping event it snowed at. Then they had cold muddy dirty pavillions. I love my pop tent. I pointed and laughed and helped beat on the pavillions with a broom. :D
