A specific idea for the not-too-distant future option - research the oil crash (aka peak oil where we don't run out of oil, per sae, but are able to acquire less and less of it easily, prices skyrocket, etc) and write your story based on the world during or after that.
OR
Take one of your current projects and treat it as a Nanowrimo project, maybe not finishing it in one month, but put a month of real, intense work into it, trying to write a certain amount each day/week.
